It has been a truly sad month for those
of us who knew Ed Dumstorff. He
passed away March 26, 2003 from complications of a heart procedure.
He had been ill for several years due to emphysema.
He hadn’t been to the field for two or three years due to the
illness, but his heart was still dedicated to building and modeling in
general. He was very active
in the Shriner's and he always saw that I had tickets to the Circus
every year.
I was very ill this winter and Ed called me regularly to see how I was.
This one gesture of compassion for a friend will remain one of my
fondest memories of Ed. As
ill as he was, he still was concerned about one of his friends.
Ed’s wife Bernie talked with me recently about how happy he was to
make the presentation of the scale model of the Shriner’s Wings of
Mercy to the organization. It was a four-year labor of love, and he donated it to the
Shriner's. That says a lot
about the type of person he was. It
was also the finest looking model he ever built.
I am so very lucky to have been a part of his instruction in learning
how to fly RC models. That
time I spent in teaching Ed to fly is time that I will treasure forever.
Wheels down, final approach, calm winds, and best of luck to a fine man.
